Professor McGowan is a leading researcher in chronic disease self-management programmes and strategies. Currently, Professor McGowan directs the Ladner Satellite Office under the Centre on Aging, and is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences, University of Victoria . Previously, he was the Associate Director of the Institute of Health Promotion Research at the University of British Columbia .
As principal investigator for numerous projects, Professor McGowan had successfully acquired research or equivalent grants totaling US$3.75 million. He has also published multiple articles in refereed journals, written chapters, books and monographs, book reviews and reports, and papers. He is also a prolific presenter who has been invited to be a keynote speaker at conferences, symposiums and forums, as well as to give public and instructional lectures. The focus of his publications and lectures are mainly in programme evaluation, health education, and the implementation of self-management interventions.
During the last 20 years, his main research focus has been self-management programmes and strategies for people with chronic health conditions. He has coordinated numerous research projects investigating the effectiveness and impact of self-management with various populations, including Canada 's First Nation and Aboriginal communities, and most recently, in China .
Professor McGowan received his Masters in Social Work as well as Ph.D in Health Promotion from the University of British Columbia . His scholarly and professional interests are in chronic health conditions, participatory research, aboriginal health education, health promotion, program evaluation, seniors' medication, self-care, diabetes, self-management education, and mixed methods approach.
